The Current Wedding Invitation Trends
by Janine Sinclair
Today's wedding invitations are very different from those used just twenty years ago. In days past, the wedding invitations were very formal, both in appearance and wording. Today's invitations are often informal, with some bordering on whimsical.
A wedding invitation is the first glimpse your guests will have into the overall theme of your nuptials. The level of traditional and formality that will surround your wedding will usually be indicated by the style and design of your invitations.
Some of the popular trends involve the weight of the card stock or paper. One hundred percent cotton paper, recycled paper, and even pocket size cards are all highly sought after. However, this is not the only area where changes are becoming readily apparent.
Many of the wedding invitations made of recycled paper also have seeds implanted in them. After the wedding, the guests can plant the invitations in order to see pretty wildflowers blossom. These are especially popular with celebrities nowadays.
Traditionally, the wedding invitations have been in shades of white or cream. However, with today's couples, there's a definite slide towards color, especially metallic blues, browns, and reds. Many couples want to make a statement with their invitations and color is one way to accomplish just that.
Years ago, the mother of the bride spent hours using hand calligraphy to address each invitation. Today, the computer makes short work of the same. There are several advantages, such as a faster turn around time, without sacrificing any of the quality of work.
Non-traditional invitations are certainly in high demand. "Save-the-Date Cards" are quite popular, as are destination weddings. However, there are still those who prefer the traditional, formal invitation, but with a twist. There are now several styles of invitations that come with a pocket where a card with the wedding information is placed. Die cuts and vellum sleeves are also all the rage.
While the invitation can set the tone for your wedding, it's only useful if it reaches the intended destination. Be sure you have the correct addresses for your friends and family members. There are now online software tools to help you confirm addresses, as well as setting up an area for RSVPs online, instead of returning the reply cards.
Of course, with the age of the internet, you don't even have to leave your home to order your wedding invitations. Most of the online print stores offer templates of every design and you can see a proof of what the finished invitation will look like before you order. Be sure the company you use offers a money back guarantee if you are not satisfied with your invitations. Also make sure you allow time for a reprint if it is needed.
Who knows what the next decade will bring to wedding invitations? We may find digital invitations within the envelopes, with only a simple button to push in order to RSVP. For now, we must make due with these latest trends. That's not so bad, after all.
