Flowers for Birthdays
by Jeremy Smith
Florists provide arrangements for almost any occasion, and birthdays are no exception. The nice thing about ordering flowers as a birthday gift is that they can be easily chosen because each month of the year has a special flower that symbolizes that month, taking indecision out of the wide assortment that is available, and personalizing the selection for the recipient.
January
Carnation: A grandmother or mother may enjoy a bouquet of white, pink and red carnations that can be a brightener for almost any room in the house.
February
Violet: Its color coincides with the amethyst birthstone of that birthday month.
March
Daffodil: Most often this is a bright yellow flower, a harbinger of the beginning of Spring toward the month's end. It may also be orange or white.
April
Daisy: The very often used expression, "fresh as a daisy," needs no explanation, for there is nothing quite as fresh and spirited as this lovely and delicate flower.
May
Lily of the Valley: This is a flower so fragrant that it is the base of many fine colognes and perfumes. It is sheltered in its strong and deep green leaves, as much an adornment as the flowers themselves.
June
Rose: Those lucky enough to be born in a month symbolized by this classic beauty can expect the freshest and longest lasting buds of perfection from a good florist, whether they are being delivered locally or across the ocean.
July
Water Lily: It finds its beautiful and graceful shape clothed in colors of pink, white, and lavender.
August
Galdiolus: These long-stemmed, multi-flowered vines come in an assortment of colors sure to please the eye.
September
Aster: Almost resembling the daisy, the difference with an aster is that it has a number of smaller and finer petals beaming from its center. The hues are often those of the last of the summer pastels of lavender and pink.
October
Marigold: Autumn colors of bright orange and yellow replace the dimming sun's rays as the days become darker, except in places where these stunning flowers' hues illuminate and charm.
November
Chrysanthemum: This hearty flower comes in an assortment of colors and is often referred to as a mum. Its many colors are displayed in some of the most splendid autumnal gardens through the end of the season.
December
Narcissus: White as the driven snow with delicate orange stamen peeping from its center, these pert and pretty flowers look luscious enough to eat.
Of course, a florist will have almost all these selections available throughout the year.
